Montepaschi brings in a win at Nelson Mandela Forum by defeating German team, Bayern Munich, 71-62. But they aren’t able to turn around the shot differential (89-79 round one).

The teams are 5-5 after less than 4’ from tipoff. Hunter’s dunk puts Mens Sana ahead, but Bayern gets a triple from Delaney. At mid quarter, the teams are tied 8-8, then Hackett penetrates to put Montepaschi back on top. With 3’ until the first buzzer, Siena is up by 5 (16-13). The Germans tie it up, but Siena creeps ahead again from the line, thanks to Danny Boy. Bayern ties it again, but Viggiano triples to bring the score to 21-18 to end the first quarter.

The game remains balanced and, after 4’ it’s tied (28-28). Bayern gets ahead from the line, but Green responds from the arc for a 1 point lead (31-30 at mid quarter). Hunter’s shot widens the gape for Siena. Montepaschi is up by 7 with 2’ until the half thanks to a triple from Nelson Nelson (38-31), then Hackett adds three points for +10 (41-31). With 7” left, Bayern goes to the line for three free throws (one on a technical called on Crespi) that Delaney doesn’t miss. Second quarter ends 41-34.

Bayern immediately scores at the start of the third. Siena responds through Carter with a triple, and the Germans strike back with 4 points in a row that bring the score to 44-40 at 6’30”. Hunter’s dunk ends their opponents’ minibreak and kicks off one from Siena. Green triples to make the score 49-40. Bryant scores in the heart of the paint and Green lands a hook shot. The Germans add two points and third quarter ends 52-44.

Ortner opens the final quarter with a basket for a 10 point lead. Bayern responds through their Austrian athlete, then Green scores (58-46). The team from Bavaria quickly reaches bonus and comes up to trail by 7. Nelson scores to make that a 9 point difference (60-51). With 3’ left, Montepaschi leads by 14 (68-54). Nelson widens the gap for Siena, but Bayern comes within 9 with 16” left to play (70-61). Hackett and Bryant land one free throw each and the game ends 71-62.
