Montepaschi conquers PalaWhirpool in Varese in overtime by a score of 71-80, and keeps a hold on second place for the playoffs.
Montepaschi starts off well and leads 7-4 after 3′. De Nicolao ties the score, but Montepaschi comes back to trail by 1 as the end of the quarter thanks to a triple from Janning and a basket from Cournooh. The quarter ends 17-16.
It’s immediately an 8-0 run for Varese at the start of the second. Ornterends the break, but Scekic has a ready response. It’s strike and counter strike between Sakota and Cournooh, and the score is 29-21 at mid quarter. Varese gets up by 10 through Rush, but Siena responds with Hunter. Viggiano narrows the gap for Montepaschi. Scekic adds point, but it’s Hunter for Siena. Cournooh makes 1/2 from the line and second quarter ends 33-28.
Banks starts the third with two consecutive basketsi. Hunter hits the target. Haynes goes 1/2 from the line, but Ere puts Cimberio in the lead: 40-31 after 4′. Siena comes up to trail by 7 through Haynes on the line and Ortner for two (40-35 at 4’20”). Johnson scores but then gets called on a technical that brings Siena within 5 after Milano’s ex player scores. Janning’s triple brings the score to 42-40 for Siena with just a handful of seconds before the third buzzer. Banks responds in kind for a 5 point lead, then Ortner brings in a three point play with 36″ left. Polonara’s basket puts Cimberio up by 5. Viggiano scores for Montepaschi, and the third quarter ends 8-45.
Polonara scores at the start of the fourth, but Nelson triples to trail by 2. Viggiano ties it up (50-50). Varese gets ahead with Johnson. Siena ties it again, then sends Polonara to the line for a 54-52 score for the home team. De Nicolao widens the gap from the line (2/2), but Montepaschi gets points from Haynes. Varese is up by 3 with 3′ left (62-59). Carter brings Siena up to trail by 1, but Cimberio widens the gap from the line. Carter strikes with 20″ left (64-64), then no one scores. The game goes into overtime.
