Montepaschi avenges the humiliation they suffered game 1 and takes game 2 in by beating Olympiakos 65-82.
It’s a completely different game than the first match. Montepaschi immediately scores through Carraretto. Olympiakos responds with Spanoulis and a triple from Papanikolau, but Rakovic narrows the gap to make it 5-4 at 6’30”. The score is tied at mid game (6-6). Spanoulis puts his team back ahead from the line, but Kaukenas ties it back up and then gives his team the lead (8-10). The Reds creep ahead again, but Siena makes a 10-0 break that ends first quarter 12-20.
Hairston makes it a 10 point game in favour of Montepaschi at the start of second quarter. Siena gets up by 14 then Erceg ends Mens Sana’s run from the arc. However, Mens Sana’s captain has a ready response. After 3’, Siena leads 15-27. The green-and-whites control their lead (with 4’ left it’s 20-34) and play building their offensive plays with patience. Olympiakos, however, doesn’t give up and is comes within 8 at the end of second quarter, which ends 31-39.
Erceg leads Olympiakos’ comeback. His team is down by 4 with 8’30” left (35-39). Hairston hits one off the backboard and Zisis knocks down a triple, but Boroussis lands 5 points that bring the score to 40-44. The ex Spurs athlete adds another four points for Montepaschi, who’s leading 40-48.. The Reds get a three from Papaoluokas but Siena responds in kind through Rakovic. It’s strike and counterstrike between the two teams. The Score is 45-52 with 4’ left in the quarter. Montepaschi holds on to their single digit lead (47-56 with 2’20” left). Hairston’s triple makes that lead 10 at the end of the quarter. The score is 51-61.
It’s a 3-0 run for Olimpiakos at the start of the final quarter. Rakovic brings the score to 54-63 and Stonerook triple for a 12 point lead. Boroussis scores for Greece, but Hairston’s triple caresses the rim then enters. Siena has a 13 point lead with 5’30” left in the game (58-71). Jaric makes the score 60-77 with 2’40’ until the final buzzer. Hairston adds an exclamation point with a two-hander. The clock keeps ticking and Siena takes home game 2 by beating Olimpiakos 65-82.
